When you move in to a new home,
it’s only natural to want to put your own personal touches to the house. It’s a
different story if you buy a plot and build your own dream home, but most
likely in a city like Delhi, you will end up buying an old house or apartment
which is already been build. The décor, the finishes, the fixture and paint
colors will be according to the taste of the previous owner or the builder.
Here
are some tips to make a house feel like your own.
Put
your favorite colors to your home……… Choose a favorite color of yours and
paint the walls with it. If your favorite colors are red, orange or any bright
color then go little subtle and paint only an accent wall. If you can’t paint your
whole exterior then just paint the entry door.
The way you combine your fave hues is as individual as you are. One easy (no
painting) way to spread some color around is to pile on some pretty pillows.
Mix them in the same color story for a fresh and lively look
that has a lot of impact without being expensive.
Hang
personal photos……… Getting a few favorite family photos up on the wall is one of
the quickest and easiest ways to make a new place feel like home.
Hang Art Pieces........One
great piece of artwork can create a focal point and enliven an entire room. It
doesn’t need to be a priceless item, as long as it speaks to you. Nothing will
be more personal than your kid’s artwork, so instead of pasting it in your
fridge like most parents do, just frame it and hang it.
Deck the walls……… Paint
and artwork are not the only acceptable accessories for walls. Frame intricate
handkerchiefs and scarves, or hang a colorful hat or two. Put up removable wall
papers in a range of inspired patterns so that you can just remove it when you
feel bored of it. There’s no better way to feel
happy and inspired in a space than to fill your walls with things that bring
you joy.
Upgrade window treatments........ Whether you
go for expensive customized blinds or simple roller shades or a layered look
with curtains, having a window treatment you love is decorating details that
can make a space feel more polished. When selecting window treatments, choose
the same liner fabric on all windows for a consistent look from outside.
Buy fresh
flowers……. A bouquet of freshly cut flowers, whether from the
grocery store or your backyard, can instantly make any room feel
friendlier. Make a single arrangement or pull out a few single blooms to
display in bud vases around the house.
Engage the other senses………..It’s
not only about visuals. Tap in the power of scent by lighting scented candles
and using soothing natural fragrances throughout the house, it can be an air
spray or even cleaning supplies. When your home begins to smell familiar, it’ll
feel more like home.
Showcase Your Adventures……….Group sets of items you’ve
collected to show them off—and save space along the way. Make a collage of your
travel photos. Create inspiration boards that reflect specific
interests. Place one in your kitchen with go-to recipes. Don’t hide your
hobbies, showcase them!!!
Do it yourself…….If you and your family
are handy people, then make something of your own. It doesn’t have to be a big
project. Baskets, shelves, photo frames, décor pieces are some of the easy
projects you can do. The added benefit of DIY is, what we
have is uniquely ours; no one can walk in to a store and buy that product.
A library…….Having books around the home make the space feel more
personal, warm and lived in. If you have room for one then make a library
or just a bookshelf will also do.
